Love fresh cherries Challenge!!

This summer has been incredible. All we have done is picnic out with tons of refreshing fresh fruit!

It is currently British cherry season ( From June until September) and I have to say this is a fruit I don’t often eat! Nor do my children and yet I LOVE cherries or anything cherry flavoured! Perfect time to take on the Love Fresh Cherry challenge!

Firstly lets talk about these amazing little things as there is so much in them I didn’t know about!

Firstly they are jam packed with anti oxidants and anti inflammatory compounds. They can slow down ageing thus help fight off  of illnesses like heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. They only contain less than 100 calories in 1 cup and contain 15% of your daily vitamin c needs!

Here is the best bit….they HELP PROMOTE SLEEP!! Yes mums you heard!! They are one of the few food sources that contain melatonin. This is one of the hormones that helps control our wake sleep cycles.

There are so many ways to use them! Add them to cakes, smoothies, eat them raw, puddings even add them to water for added taste.

I really wanted to do something to incorporate these into something my children could have. So I decided to make a delicious smoothie that I could put into a feeding pouch to take out and about on our picnics!

First thing….the pip! Yea..this can put me off especially when giving them to kids.But who knew you could get a  Cherry pitter!

You will need

  • 2 Cups of yogurt of your choosing (I added full fat natural yogurt. My children are still small so I do like to use full fat where I can for them. But you can use any yogurt you wish)
  • A half a cup of fresh cherries
  • A banana

I wanted to make a large batch so I could also freeze some.

Add it all into a blender and blend until smooth. You can be quite creative with this and adjust this according to your taste.


One I had done this, I simply added them into our Wee Sprout reusable food pouches. These are extra large but you can get them in different sizes. It filled four so two went in the freezer and two went in the fridge for that day.

The children love them and I have added them to our regular shop to try out different ways of using them.

    I haven’t had cherries in years! I always worried about the pips with my daughter. I’d probably just cut them up now. A smoothie is a great idea.
